• Thumbnails should use object-fit: contain instead of cover - often you need to see the whole image. Maybe under a media_library config flag, defaulting to cover?
• Clicking a thumbnail anywhere should open a dialog with the full (contained) image and the info panel, as in the media library. Probably with the exception of in the list view of a collection. Maybe it can be done by sending you to the media library entry, preview mode.
• Speaking of the info panel, it seems the "used by" feature is broken. Always says "None".
• With these changes, the thumbnail in the info panel can be tossed. It's marginally larger than the thumbnail in the tile pane anyway.
• Oh I'd love to have the ability to crop and rotate images right from the media library... And an advanced plus would be a choice to keep the original.

What thumbnails are you talking about? In the Asset Library, thumbnails are already displayed with object-fit: contain unless you’re on mobile. In the Content Library, entry thumbnails have object-fit: cover, but that’s intentional. These two pages serve different purposes.

That shouldn’t happen in the content library, where thumbnails are just a way to help you find entries faster.

Just running into this as well - so to clarify about the object-fit:
In the assets explorer, the thumbnails are rendered with object-fit: contain, but in the collection view, they have object-fit: cover.

Thumbnails are meant to help you distinguish between entries at a glance. If the images are too similar, you can turn off the thumbnails with thumbnail: [].

My apologies, I was looking at an old project that is still using staticcms ( which has the problem with cropped thumbs in asset/media).

Disregard what I said about the use of object-fit....

I still wish there was a way of seeing a significantly larger image in the asset library and picker. Low priority...

The picker refers to this Select Image dialog, right? Then it makes sense to display enlarged images; these are different from entry thumbnails. Some DAM apps like Adobe Bridge have a slider at the bottom of the window that lets users adjust the size of thumbnails. I have plan to implement such a slider in the Asset Library, and it can be added to the image picker as well.

Though I was thinking more of clicking on an expand icon on the corner of a thumbnail and get an enlarged version I can select or dismiss in the asset picker. In the asset library such an ui would feel like the right place for actions on individual images instead of the current info pane. As the sizes of thumbnail and it's full image on the info page is not hugely different it feels a bit useless...

I can see the zoom thing being very useful too - scrolling through large thumbnails would help as well.

I just realized I can double click a thumbnail in the asset library for the behaviour I wanted. But I had expected it on a single click so didn't notice. And in the asset picker, it would still need to be an icon of sorts for that view as a single click should still select an image.

The reasoning with an expand button vs an enlarged grid is that I might want to keep the thumbnails conservatively sized while scrolling until I think I have the image, then open as large as possible to verify. I might be old, but doing that with a slider seems uncomfortable as I would have to slide it back to keep scrolling.
